Making more out of life

By selecting Age Concern when you shop online, you will be choosing to make a difference to the lives of older people like your grandparents, relatives and neighbours who due to circumstances now live in a world which can be empty and lonely.

Did you Know?

•    We are living in an ageing population. By the year 2020 a third of our population will be over 50

•    Over 65s are twice as likely as other age groups to spend over 21 hours of the day alone

•    There are currently 2.1million pensioners living in poverty (after housing costs)

At Age Concern our mission is to promote the well-being of all older people and to help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience

What we do locally

Our unique structure means that we are the only local organisation for older people which can also provide regional and national perspectives on ageing issues. There is a local Age Concern in almost every community in the country.

A lot of our work is carried out locally through our network of 540 local Age Concerns and 2000+ day centres. Local services can include information, advice and advocacy services, IT and other training, day centres and lunch clubs, as well as home help and 'handyperson' schemes.

Who we help

Lily, like many people was looking forward to a long and happy retirement with her husband; they had moved into a new area and were excited about their new life together. Tragically, shortly after relocating; Lily’s husband died. Lily was absolutely grief stricken. She had lost the love of her life and her best friend.

The shock of her husband’s death left Lily feeling terribly insecure and withdrawn, she would spend days and nights alone, often going a week without any contact with any other human being.

Lily’s housing association got in contact with her local Age Concern, due to Lily’s limited mobility; she is unable to leave the house. Every week someone from Age Concern visits Lily to help with the housework and do some shopping. This has made a tremendous difference to Lily’s life. She is able to live in a clean and tidy home that she feels proud of. Seeing a friendly and familiar face has helped Lily to face the future in the knowledge that she is not entirely alone.

What we do nationally

On a national level, Age Concern campaigns on a wide range of issues to safeguard the rights, wellbeing and dignity of older people. Our national work includes delivering national programmes, working with industry to promote the rights of older people, conducting research into issues affecting older people, providing a voice for older people and providing grants to older people’s groups. Our role is extremely important when it comes to influencing public opinion and government policy about older people.
